Digital platforms now have strong control over the film business in India. Earlier, they paid very high amounts for OTT rights, but now they have reduced those prices and started setting their own rules.
They are deciding release dates, adding new conditions, and even asking to hear the script before signing deals. Recently, they introduced a new rule that has shocked many producers.
Now, the final OTT price depends on how well the film performs in theatres. Earlier, producers depended heavily on digital deals to recover their investment, but that is no longer the case. If a film fails at the box office, recovering money becomes very difficult.
OTT platforms will pay the full amount only if the film does well in theatres. Otherwise, they cut down the deal, increasing financial pressure on producers. Many young producers have spoken about this growing stress.
For now, producers have no choice but to accept these new rules. To make profits, they must deliver successful films. Theatre revenue has once again become the main support for producers.
