Meena Kumari, a legendary actress, passed away on March 31, 1972, at the age of 38. Her close friend Nargis Dutt wrote a piece about her passing.
Meena Kumari, also known as Mahjabeen Bano, is one of the most well-known actresses in Hindi film. Over the course of a 33-year career, she appeared in around 92 films. Despite being a well-known actress, she was frequently in the news during her lifetime. Her close friend Nargis Dutt also discussed her contentious life in a letter.
The renowned actress made news for her unpleasant marriage to director Kamal Amrohi and her unsuccessful relationship with Dharmendra. Meena Kumari passed suddenly on March 31, 1972, at the age of 38, following a two-day coma.
“Meena Kumari, Maut Mubarak ho!” was the last words Nargis Dutt uttered to her friend as she underwent her last rites. In an article that appeared in an Urdu magazine, the renowned actress explained why she had said this to her close friend.
Congratulations on your passing: I have never before said this. Meena, your baaji (older sister) wishes you a happy death and asks you to leave this world forever. People like you are not intended for this location, she wrote. The actress continued in her blog by recalling the event that had transformed them from colleagues in the industry to close friends. She had stated, “My husband (Sunil Dutt) invited me on sets with the kids during the filming of Main Chup Rahungi. Meena and I made many lifelong friends there. Meena voluntarily took care of Sanjay and Namrata while I was out to supper with Dutt saab, from changing their clothes to preparing their milk.
Then Nargis Dutt recalled, “One night, I saw her panting in the garden, I told her, why don’t you rest, you look very tired. She said, “Baaji, resting is not in my destiny. I will rest just one time.” That night there was the noise of violence from her room. The next day, I saw her eyes were swollen. I caught hold of Kamal Amrohi’s secretary Baqar and spoke to him in direct terms, “Why do you people want to kill Meena? She has worked enough for your sake, For how long is she going to feed you?” He said, when the right time comes, we will rest her
In her article’s conclusion, Nargis said that Meena had divorced Kamal Amrohi following that incident, but that she had fallen badly into an alcohol addiction and had to be committed to the hospital. Nargis summarised the incident by saying, “After some time, I learned she had left Kamal saheb’s home. She and Baqar got into a heated argument, and after that she avoided Kamal Amrohi’s home altogether. Soon enough, her liver became weak from drinking too much alcohol. You are free, but what use is such freedom when you are determined to murder yourself? I questioned her when I went to see her at the nursing home. “Baaji, my patience has a limit,” she retorted. The secretary to Kamal Saheb has the audacity to touch me. When I Notwithstanding complaints, Kamal Saab took no action. I have now made the decision to stay away from him.
Following this, Dharmendra entered Meena Kumari’s life, which temporarily brought her some level of happiness.
