Sankranthi season for Telugu Cinema has grown into the season for big releases over the years. Nandamuri Taraka Ramarao initially got the name of Sankranthi Hero with many of his movies becoming successes released during the season. After him Superstar Krishna got the name of Sankranthi Hero and he scored blockbusters and many hits during the season. After that generation of heroes, Chiranjeevi and Balakrishna have been eyeing the spot and for most of his career Balakrishna made a point that his movies release during the season and he scored blockbusters with the releases.
There were some major disappointments too but Nandamuri fans have got accustomed to watching their hero’s movie for Sankranthi for at least every alternate year. In 2016, he released Dictator in competition with Soggade Chinni Nayana, Express Raja and Nannaku Prematho. This time after 17 years, he is releasing his movie in clash with Megastar Chiranjeevi’s 150th and by the look of it he wants to create records with his 100th movie. Well, yes it is hard to think about records in competition but with a historical subject and a phenomenal setting, Balakrishna can deliver a knock out punch to all movies.
He did the same in 2001 when three movies were released for Sankranthi, Mrugaraju, Narasimha Naidu and Devi putrudu. Coincidentally, even this year, three movies are releasing. Additionally, Gautamiputra Satakarni directed by Krrish got tax exemption from both the Telugu states and this means the share will be higher. The release of the movie is locked for 12th Jan 2017 and if movie gets a positive Word of Mouth, then history of Narasimha Naidu could repeat with record breaking margin and vice versa is possible too if movie gets a bad talk. Well this Sankranthi battle has just started heating up!
