Mohanlal has resigned as President of the Association of Malayalam Movie Actors (AMMA) because of the sexual, rape allegations against major figures in the Malayalam industry including veteran actor Siddique and filmmaker Ranjith Balakrishnan.
The entire committee of AMMA has also resigned. AMMA said the committee took “moral responsibility” for the allegations made by some actors against its members.
The Malayalam film industry has been undergoing major changes since the Justice K Hema Committee reported harassment and abuse of women professionals.
This has led to the resignation of two prominent figures over sexual abuse claims.
With growing pressure on the government to act against alleged offenders Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan held a meeting with senior police officials and decided to form a seven members special team to investigate the issues faced by women actors.
