Maruthi-Prabhas: Chasing Content in Costly Cinema

Following the grand success of the Baahubali series, Prabhas aimed for a small-budget film in between his big-budget ventures. Teaming up with director Maruthi, they initially planned to complete the film within an 80 crore budget, emphasizing content over extravagant spending.

Despite efforts to keep costs controlled, the budget reportedly surged after shooting commenced, with speculations suggesting a rise due to increased VFX expenses, potentially reaching Rs 250 crores. Prabhas, known for his market pull, seems unaffected by the escalating budget, with expectations that the film’s business won’t suffer due to his strong audience base.

However, this budget surge challenges his intention to explore smaller projects. Despite the cost concerns, if the promotional content strikes a chord, the film might generate pre-release profits. However, the film’s release isn’t slated for the upcoming year, as Prabhas is occupied shooting for ‘Kalki,’ anticipated for a 2025 Sankranti release.

Simultaneously, Maruthi’s directorial is also anticipated to hit screens in the same year’s summer. Despite aspirations for a smaller-scale project, Prabhas’ attempts seem to face hurdles in containing the budget, showcasing the complexities of balancing costs amidst his larger-than-life cinematic pursuits.
