Maruthi Nagar Subramanyam is Rao Ramesh‘s new film that has been presented by Sukumar‘s wife Tabitha Sukumar. The family drama was being promoted on an aggressive note for the last few days and has been released today with decent hype. Directed by Lakshman Karya, let’s see if the film lives up to the hype or not.

Maruthi Nagar Subramanyam Review

Story: Subramanyam(Rao Ramesh) has only one dream of getting a government job. But he never gets that and wastes his time as his wife(Indraja) takes care of the entire family. He has a useless son Arjun(Ankit Koyya) who is also not serious in life. One fine day, when his wife is away, a sum of ten lakhs gets credited into Subramanyam’s account and he panics. He tries to find who sent the money but as he has too many issues to handle, he finishes all the money. This leads him into deeper problems. The rest of the story is about how Subramanyam and his son Arjun handled this situation.

Performances: Rao Ramesh is the show stealer and carries the film on his shoulders. He gets a tailor-made role to showcase what he is capable of which makes the Subramanyam character quite interesting. Rao Ramesh’s trademark satires and the way he behaves when he gets a lot of money are showcased superbly by the actor. However, he also overacts in several scenes and goes a bit overboard in the second half. Indraja is impressive as Ram Ramesh’s wife and gets a simple role. Ankit Koyya, who plays the lead is decent in his role. He does what is required. Harshvardhan was neat in his key role. Ramya Pasupuleti is okay but the way she was showcased as a modern girl did not suit her persona. Comedian Praveen‘s entry in the climax is over the top.

Technical Aspects: The production values of the film are decent. The writing is weak as the subject matter has many loopholes. There are so many logical issues in the script which cannot be ignored. The music is good and so was the BGM. The dialogues, especially those written for Rao Ramesh are amazing. The editing is decent but the screenplay goes down in the second half as there is no power in the emotions. Rao Ramesh’s character graph is not etched properly and leaves a lot of questions unanswered. The camerawork is decent and the supporting cast is also okay.

Analysis: Maruthi Nagar Subramanyam is a simple story of a man getting a huge amount credited into his account. The director Lakshman weaved a story around it. But in today’s time, it takes a second to find out who sent the money to your account. But the main lead takes days and ignores who sent him money. Even if he tries, the way he goes about it is not established properly.

Even if we think that the makers have taken cinematic liberties, they should have come up with scenes that sound logical. But that does not happen. The first half of the film is showcased in a funny manner and the scenes that showcase how the money comes, how the characters react and the comedy evoked looks good. But this aspect is stretched to another level and loses its steam.

The character of Subramanyam is a hopeless guy who does not find any redemption. Being such a senior guy, the director failed to show any emotion or pain in his character. The film is narrated only in a funny manner. Despite getting into trouble, Rao Ramesh does not change and the climax where he gets a job is showcased in a very silly manner. His character does not get a proper transformation.

The second half is where the film falters and falls on its face. The emotions are not at all serious. There was so much scope to showcase redemption but that is not handled properly and the climax is so predictable as things are ended on a simple note. The film has decent comedy in the first half but the lack of seriousness in the second half is a huge disappointment.

Verdict: Overall, Maruthi Nagar Subramanyam has a few laughs in the first half. Rao Ramesh tries too hard to save the film in the first half but the predictable narration, lack of depth in emotions, and silly scenes take the film down and make it a silly watch.

Bottom Line: A silly and over-the-top comedy

Rating: 2.5/5
