Mareechika, starring Anupama Parameswaran, Regina Cassandra, and Viraj Ashwin, released in theatres on Friday. Directed by Satish Kasetty with music by Ilaiyaraaja, the film came with good expectations. But has it managed to impress the audience? Let’s see in the review.

Mareechika Story: Venkata Lakshmi (Anupama Parameswaran), a college student, is deeply in love with Sanju (Viraj Ashwin), who runs the college canteen. However, Sanju falls for her friend Mareechika (Regina Cassandra), who has returned from the US, and marries her. Soon after the wedding, it is revealed that Mareechika married him for his property. Following a fight, she appears to kill Sanju, but he is later found alive.

During the police investigation, a shocking truth emerges, Mareechika does not actually exist. Then who is Mareechika? What is Venkata Lakshmi’s mental condition? The rest of the film unfolds these mysteries.

Performances: Mareechika largely revolves around the characters played by Anupama Parameswaran, Regina Cassandra, and Viraj Ashwin. Anupama delivers a good performance in a role that carries both positive and negative shades. Her de-glam look suits the character, and she especially impresses in the police station scenes with her emotional variations. Regina looks convincing as a girl returning from the US, though her performance lacks depth and variation. Viraj Ashwin is decent as a romantic lead but is less effective in scenes that require cunningness. Supporting actors Ajay Ghosh, Vadlamani Srinivas, and Thagubothu Ramesh are satisfactory.

Technical Aspects: Director Satish Kasetty struggles to keep the audience engaged with the fast-paced screenplay that a thriller like Mareechika needs. The story written by Lakshmi Bhupal is interesting and has a good core idea, but the dialogues lack impact. Ilaiyaraaja’s background score works well in the romantic scenes and adds emotion where needed.

There is not much scope for songs in the story, and the two montage songs fail to leave a strong impression. The production values are decent, and Aravind Kannabiran’s cinematography is satisfactory, supporting the film’s overall mood without standing out too much.

Analysis: Mareechika suffers mainly because of its delayed release. Though completed years ago, the film feels outdated in its presentation, performances, and overall treatment. Director Satish Kasetty tries to blend romance, thriller, revenge drama, and horror, but the storytelling lacks grip. Apart from a few twists and a decent interval sequence, the film moves slowly and struggles to keep the audience engaged.

Despite having talented actors like Anupama Parameswaran and Regina Cassandra, along with music by Ilaiyaraaja, the film fails to fully utilize their strengths, resulting in an average and outdated thriller.

Verdict: Mareechika has an interesting premise and a few engaging twists, but its outdated treatment, slow narration, and uneven genre mix make it a below-par thriller.

Bottom Line: An outdated thriller.

Rating: 1.5/5
