Kollywood star Dhanush’s new film, Maaran under the direction of Karthick Naren had a direct-to-OTT release on Disney Plus Hotstar on March 11th. Let’s see how it fares.
Story: After the tragic death of his sister, Maaran( Dhanush), an investigative journalist decides to crack the case individually. In the process, he goes against a powerful politician Pazhani( Samuthirakani). Who kills Maaran’s sister? Why will Maaran suspect Pazhani in his sister’s death mystery? How will Maaran be able to track the main head behind the mysterious crime case, forms the rest of the story.
Performances: Dhanush is okay with his usual acting in the given role of an investigative journalist. Dhanush tried to bring depth to the proceedings with his intense performance in this political thriller.
Samuthirakani as a negative shaded politician did a decent job. His confrontation episodes with Dhanush are showcased in a decent manner.
Young beauty Smruthi Venkat is impressive in her given key role as the hero sister. Heroine Malavika Mohan is fine in her extended cameo role. Other supporting artists who played key roles are apt in their roles.
Technicalities: Music by GV Prakash Kumar is okay as his background registers in a few key episodes in the second half. The cinematography by Vivekanand Santhosham is nice as he showcased the night mood shots with a good lighting setup.
Editing by Prasanna GK is fine as he tried to cut short the film’s runtime to two hours. Production values for this Sathya Jyothi Films production venture are good.
Analysis: Undoubtedly, Maaran is the dull work from director Karthick Naren. The director who earlier made gripping thriller like Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru has titled towards a routine template concept for Maaran. While his basic storyline is weak, the narration part is also filled with loopholes such as flat and outdated proceedings.
Though the lead artists gave a decent performance, that routine template scenes throughout the film stall tall as the demerits for the film. To summerize, Maaran is an unengaging political investigative thriller that has nothing is new to impress the viewers.
Verdict: Formulaic thriller!
