Language cross-overs not a good idea anymore?

Until a few years ago, lots and lots of Tamil movies used to do very well in Telugu, with their dubbed versions, so much so that the actors became fan favorites and even stars in Telugu, despite a single straight film. However, that hasn’t been the case for a long time now, with no Tamil dubbed movie doing very well at the box office, with the exception of Kamal Haasan’s Vikram, which was released last month.

While Tamila actors have been able to make a name for themselves in Telugu, the same hasn’t been the case with Telugu actors, as very rarely did a Telugu film ever get released in Tamil Nadu. While many actors did try their hands at getting a market in Tamil Nadu, most of them have been unsuccessful. Most recently, Ram Pothineni tried his luck with Linguswamy’s The Warrior.

There was a good buzz surrounding the film in Tamil and in Telugu as well, but the film ended up as a disaster in both languages. While this is just one most recent example, judging by the trend in the last few years, it looks like language cross-overs are done, and audiences are either in for pan-Indian movies or direct movies only. That way, the sensibilities would at least be intact.
