Mollywood star Dulquer Salmaan’s new film, Kurup under the direction of Srinath Rajendran has caught the audience’s attention with its promos. Co-starring Sobhita Dhulipala, the film has hit the screens today in all South languages. Let’s analyse it.

Story: Kurup is a biographical crime drama based on the fugitive Sudhakara Kurup. Being a runaway army, Gopi Krishna Kurup aka Sudhakara Kurup(Dulquer Salmaan) eventually emerges as a don in the crime world. How will Kurup manage to take the lead in the crime universe? What kind of hurdles will the Kerala police face in tracking Kurup’s whereabouts? Forms the main crux of the film.

Performances: Dulquer Salmaan portrayed the role of Sudhakar Kurup with utmost ease. Be it his body language or his electrifying screen presence, the talented actor pulled off the character in a perfect manner.

Sobhita Dhulipala impresses yet again with her performance-oriented character. The family scenes between Dulquer and Sobhita are executed in a decent manner.

Indrajith Sukumaran did his purposeful role in a convincing manner. Other actors such as Tom Chacko, Sunny Wayne and Bharath Niwas are fine in their extended cameo characters.

Technicalities: Cinematography by Nimish Ravi is top-notch as he tried to bring the 70s texture on the screen with his lens. Music by Sushin Shyam is a major advantage for this period crime thriller. While most of his songs are situational, Sushin’s background score lifts the soul of the film in a nice manner.

Story by Jithin K Jose is good. Screenplay and dialogues written by KS Aravind and Daniell Sayooj adds realistic flavor to the narrative. Editing by Vivek Harshan is oaky. Production values are adequate.

Analysis: Set over several years in the 60s, 70s to the early 2000s, Kurup revolves around the life story of a fugitive named Sudhakara Kurup. As the film runs mostly on the lead character, director Srinath Rajendran took good care and presented the hero elevation scenes in an impressive manner.

But the team would have worked on writing a racy screenplay version to get unanimous applause from other language audiences. Overall, Kurup is Dulquer Salmaan’s one-man show and explores the life story of the notorious criminal Sudhakara Kurup. While the period setup and the Art work stands out, uneven narration with a few predictable episodes dilutes the audience interest.

Verdict: Dulqueer Salman’s show!

Rating: 2.5/5
