Earlier, the box office fight in Tamil used to be between Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. In the current times, the box office fight between Ajith and Vijay is one of the most awaited. For this Pongal season as well, Ajith and Vijay are locking horns at the box office with Thunivu and Varisu respectively. Now, we bring you the list of times when Ajith and Vijay’s films had a box office clash.
For the first time in 1996, Ajith and Vijay’s films had a clash at the box office during the Pongal season with Vaanmathi and Coimbatore Mappillai. Though both films are successful, Coimbatore Mappillai is a bigger success at that time.
After the Pongal clash in 1996, the two hero films had a clash at the box office in the same year for the second time with Kalloori Vaasal and Poove Unakkaga. In the box office fight, Vijay’s Poove Unakkaga emerged as a massive success.
In the year 1997 during the Pongal season, Ajith and Vijay films Kaalamellam Kaathiruppen and Nesam. While Nesam starring Ajith ended up as a flop, Vijay’s Kaalamellam Kaathiruppen emerged as a box-office hit.
In December 1997, Ajith’s Rettai Jadai Vayasu and Vijay’s Kadhalukku Mariyadhai had a box office clash. This time also Vijay emerged victorious with Kadhalukku Mariyadhai.
In 1999, Vijay and Ajith’s films had a clash at the box office. While Vijay came with Thulladha Manamum, Ajith Kumar starrer Unnai Thedi had a theatrical release during the same time. Surprisingly, both films did well at the box office.
In the year 2000, Ajith’s Unnai Kodu Ennai Tharuven and Vijay’s Kushi had a box office clash. In the box office fight, Vijay’s Kushi ended up as a trendsetter.
During the Pongal season in 2001, Ajith’s Dheena and Vijay’s Friends had a box office clash. While Friends co-starring Suriya in a key role ended up as a food hit, Dheena brought Ajith a mass image and ended up as a blockbuster.
In 2002, Ajith and Vijay’s films Villain and Bagavathi had a box office clash. Though both films performed well, Ajith’s Villain performed better than Vijay’s film.
In 2003, Ajith and Vijay’s films had a clash at the box office. While Ajith’s cop drama, Anjaneya ended up as a flop, Vijay’s Thirumalai ended up as a profitable venture.
Released during the same time in 2006, Paramasivan starring Ajith in the lead role, and Vijay’s Aathi opened to negative reports. Comparatively, Ajith’s Paramasivan performed decently.
During the Pongal season in 2007, Vijay and Ajith films had a box office clash with Pokkiri and Aalwar. While Vijay’s Pokkiri, a remake of the Telugu blockbuster Pokiri ended up as a solid hit, Aalwar ended up as an average grosser.
In 2014, Ajith and Vijay’s films Veeram and Jilla had a box office clash. Reportedly, both the films did well at the ticket windows.
During Pongal 2023, once again Ajith and Vijay films had a clash at the box office with Thunivu and Varisu respectively. Both films were released on January 11th.
