Katrina Kaif Reacts on Pay Disparity in Bollywood

During a discussion about pay inequity, Katrina Kaif admitted to requesting producers to provide female performers in a film with a majority of female actors the same budget as male actors.

Known for wearing her heart on her sleeve, Katrina Kaif. Despite not being an Indian, the diva has a lengthy history of employment in the field. She has made a niche for herself in Bollywood after collaborating on screen with famous names like the three Khans, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan. Katrina Kaif said at the event, “We are asked a lot about pay disparity, and I think that’s because it’s so evident that it’s there. There’s a big debate about it, and the debate is that a lot of men say that the opening figures that are guaranteed with a male star are slightly more historically proven- that why there’s a pay difference. My argument to that is, which I discuss with a lot of producers I’m close to and have worked with, give the female-dominated films, with maybe one or two female leads, the same budget and mounting that you are giving to the male stars or the combination of a male and a female star. Give that to a female film and see what happens then.”

All that is required is for the producers to demonstrate the confidence necessary to take a chance and invest in the movie. Big action films with huge budgets include Tiger Zinda Hai and War. If we mount another movie—it could be a comedy or a pleasant summer blockbuster—and treat it the same way, the audience will perceive it as an event movie. How can the opening be compared to the Dhoom 3s of the world if most of the films starring our female protagonist have little concepts, small material, and minor natures?
