Due to Shah Rukh Khan’s superstardom, Jawan and Dunki have been able to get joint record deals with digital, satellite, and music players.
Shah Rukh Khan’s year in 2023 got off to a great start with the release of Pathaan on Republic Day, an all-time hit. The movie broke all box office records and is currently the best-selling Hindi movie of all time, with lifetime receipts surpassing Bahubali 2’s previous record. As we move towards the second half of the year, SRK is prepared to dominate the box office with two films, both produced by Red Chillies Entertainment: the Rajkumar Hirani-directed Dunki and the Atlee-directed Jawan.
It is being reported that the two Shah Rukh Khan films have landed record deals with market satellite, digital, and music providers. Jawan and Dunki’s combined non-theatrical rights have been sold to a variety of market participants for between Rs 450 and Rs 500 crore. “It’s Shah Rukh Khan v/s Shah Rukh Khan now as the top two non-theatrical deals of all time are under the name of King Khan. While the digital, satellite, and music rights of Jawan are sold for approximately Rs 250 crore, the same for Dunki is around Rs 230 crore,” revealed a source close to the development.
The source went on to say that Jawan’s dual dubbing into Tamil and Telugu is partly to blame for the minimal disparity between the two films. “The rights for Jawan are sold in all languages, whereas Dunki is primarily for just Hindi. There are some non-theatrical deals which are still getting locked and the eventual total non-theatrical revenue for two films will be close to Rs 500 crore, and both the individual deals will be among the highest ever for a feature film,” the source added. Both Jawan and Dunki are homegrown projects from SRK’s banner, Red Chillies Entertainment.
There has been a lot of excitement surrounding Jawan in recent days because the production team is preparing to release their debut trailer in the next week and connect it to Mission Impossible 7 prints. There is also a lot of discussion surrounding the theatrical rights of Jawan, but we can affirm that Dunki is also breaking records with the non-theatrical transaction, in addition to Jawan. “It’s premium content for all the players and the numbers fetched by the two films is unlike anything witnessed in recent times. It’s a testimony of SRK’s superstardom and command over the audience not just in India, but also in the international belts. The OTT players are willing to splurge more than usual due to the global appeal that SRK has, and the deal struck is a win-and-win situation for all the stakeholders,” the source concluded.
Speaking about Jawan, the Atlee-directed film also stars Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, and SRK in dual roles. The movie’s release date of September 7, 2023, has been set. Regarding Dunki, the Rajkumar Hirani-directed film, which is expected to be one of the largest social comedy of all time, will be released on film around the Christmas 2023 weekend.
