Is the end of theatre culture fast approaching?

With the advent of OTT platforms, people started to get used to the culture of watching films in the comfort of their home. It was a given that the world of OTT would one day overpower the culture of going to the theatre to watch films, but with the ongoing pandemic, the end to the cinema-going culture seems much nearer than ever.

A lot of films that were supposed to get a theatrical release ended up releasing on OTT platforms last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. A lot of films are expected to get the same treatment this year as well. On the other hand, there’s also the fact that OTT platforms offer a wider range of content and options than theatrical films. With more and more OTT platforms coming up every day, in the form of pay per view platforms and others, and the need to stay safe increasing as well, it wouldn’t be a surprise if people chose to stay home even after theatres reopened.

However, judging by how our Telugu audiences rushed to the theatres when they were reopened after a long gap in December, it still looks like the theatre-going culture is still alive. But of course, there’s no saying when this culture will come to an end, with the ongoing situations, and despite everything, if everything that is happening is taken into consideration, the culture of going to the theatres to watch a film may come to an end long before its time.
