For the most part of Indian entertainment history, Bollywood has been the definition of Indian Cinema. Most associate Indian cinema with Hindi cinema even today, but that is slowly changing, with South Cinema dominating Bollywood for the past few years.
The wave really started with the Baahubali franchise, which broke language boundaries and became a box office success everywhere, having the entire Indian audience talk about it even. After that, KGF followed, and then several other movies followed, with Saaho, Pushpa, RRR and KGF. In the last few years, no Bollywood movie has managed to make a significant impact in the country, further elevating the position of South Indian films.
With several big Bollywood films lined up to release this year, including Ranbir Kapoor’s Brahmastra and Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha, it is now to be seen whether or not Bollywood will be able to bounce back, or if South Indian cinema will continue to take over the country.
