I’ve seen Santosh Subramaniam a few times, and each time it was a joyous experience with top-notch music and acting.
Let me begin by giving you a brief story about an obedient son of a wealthy, family-oriented, protective, and control-freak father who yearns to rebel and pursue an independent career without referring to his business tycoon father. Don’t worry; you won’t be bored before we see Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt.
Let’s get back to the story. The obedient son meets a cheerful, adorable, and good-hearted girl from a middle-class household and instantly falls in love. Since he makes all of the decisions and choices for his family’s welfare, the boy’s father disapproves of the girl. Therefore, the girl must pass a test in which she must spend a few days living with the boy’s family (does this remind you of Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani yet?) and get accepted; otherwise, the boy will marry the bride that his father has chosen.
The boy’s father doesn’t try to play the bad guy in this situation; instead, he lets events develop naturally because he is sure the girl will be an outcast in their society. His family is his top priority. At the conclusion of this enjoyable journey, the girl receives approval, and the boy then encounters a new challenge when the girl’s conservative father requests that the boy spend a few days at their house in order to receive approval for marriage.
The boy was then given the okay, and they all went on to enjoy happy lives after that. This was the plot of the Tamil film Santosh Subramaniam, which appears to have inspired Karan Johar to create Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt.
I’ve seen Santosh Subramaniam a few times, and each time I did, it was a joy to watch with great acting and music. Genelia D’Souza (now Deshmukh) and Jayam Ravi were the movie’s leading ladies, and Prakash Raj and Sayaji Shinde played the father figures. The 2006 Telugu comedy Bommarillu, starring Genelia D’Souza and Siddharth, was remade in 2008 in Tamil.
So why did I get myself here acting as Wikipedia? Yes, both films’ wikis have information about the aforementioned plot. Why is this said after Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani? The moment you saw the teaser for Karan Johar’s movie, this started to ring a bell in your head as it did in mine. For me, it was the “Hey wait, I have seen something like this” moment.
Not to steal any of Karan Johar’s efforts, as he has a potential hit on his hands. In the movie Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt play a couple who move homes simultaneously and spend time at each other’s residences to win over their parents. The fostering of cross-cultural relationships also makes us think of Alia Bhatt’s 2014 film 2 States, in which two loves from various cultures attempt to wed their families first before beginning a committed relationship.
Aur Rani Kii, Rocky The teaser for Prem Kahaani suggests it will be an exhilarating roller-coaster ride with Jaya Bachchan trying to portray the spoilt brat. The budget for Karan Johar’s movie must be 10 times that of Santosh Subramaniam, with the hope that every penny will be well spent.
I have no doubt that Karan Johar has done all possible to create this masterpiece, and I hope he is successful in reviving ‘Family Cinema’ by getting the whole family to the movies.
