Ilaiyaraaja’s Transfer Request Denied

In 2022 a popular music label filed a copyright infringement case in the Bombay High Court against Ilaiyaraaja Music.

The label claimed that 228 of its 536 albums were released without permission and that Ilaiyaraaja Music uploaded songs acquired from Echo Recordings in 2021 to platforms like YouTube. They sought Rs. 1.5 crore in damages, stating that their copyright had been misused.

Ilaiyaraaja Music later filed a petition in the Supreme Court asking to move the case to the Madras High Court.

They argued that similar copyright and patent cases involving Sony Music were already being heard there and hearing related matters in two different courts might lead to conflicting judgments.

However the Supreme Court rejected the transfer request, deciding that the Bombay High Court, where the original case was filed, is the correct forum. So, the case will continue in the Bombay High Court.
