The Madras High Court has ordered the immediate removal of two Ilaiyaraaja songs used without permission in the film Dude.
The court rejected the makers request for 7 more days and asked them to submit their formal reply by January 7th. The judge said the purity and spirit of the songs had been affected.
Dude, directed by Pradeep Ranganathan, has been doing well since Diwali, but trouble began when two old Ilaiyaraaja songs, “Karthu Machaan” and “100 Varusham Indha Mappilaikkhu”, were included without his approval. Ilaiyaraaja filed a petition demanding a ban and immediate removal.
Ilaiyaraaja’s team argued that the songs were altered and used against copyright, saying they hold the rights.
The Dude team said Sony had bought the rights and permitted the usage. Earlier, the judge questioned the impact, but later felt the songs were distorted and ordered their removal.
