Ilaiyaraaja And Makers Seal Peaceful Settlement

Ilaiyaraaja is a legendary music composer respected across India. His work from film songs to grand symphonies, is considered priceless. He is also very strict about protecting the rights to his music.

Last year, the Tamil Nadu government honored him for performing a symphony in London. Recently a major Telugu production company got into trouble for using his songs without proper permission.

They produced two Tamil films, Ajith’s Good Bad Ugly and Pradeep Ranganathan’s Dude. Both were big hits, but the makers used Ilaiyaraaja’s songs assuming that getting approval from Sony Music was enough.

However, Indian copyright law clearly states that the creator’s permission is also required. So, Ilaiyaraaja filed a case. The court ordered the songs to be removed for OTT streaming until the issue was resolved.

Now, both sides have settled the matter and the production house has paid Ilaiyaraaja Rs. 50 lakh as compensation. Industry members say this is a fair legal step and a reminder to get proper permission before using any music.
