Raavu Balasaraswathi Devi, widely recognized as the first playback singer in Telugu cinema passed away peacefully at her Hyderabad home at the age of 97.
She made her cinematic singing debut in 1943 with Bhagya Lakshmi for the song “Thinne Meedha Sinnoda” composed by Bhimavarapu Narasimha Rao.
This historic song marked the beginning of playback singing in Telugu films at a time when actors traditionally sang their own songs.
She was also the first singer of ‘light music’ on All India Radio. Beyond singing she had a successful acting career starting as a child in Tamil films and later in Telugu films too.
Over her illustrious career she recorded more than 2000 songs in Telugu, Tamil and other languages. Her enchanting voice and timeless songs have left a lasting legacy shaping the history of Indian cinema and music for generations.
