Music director Gangai Amaren has firmly addressed the copyright issue involving his brother Ilaiyaraaja and the film Good Bad Ugly.
Ilaiyaraaja objected to the use of three of his songs in the film without permission and sought Rs. 5 crore as compensation.
Gangai Amaren dismissed claims that the case is financially motivated, saying, “Do you think my brother needs money? We already have more than enough”.
When asked why they don’t donate more if they’re wealthy, he replied, “We worked hard for it. Our children should benefit. Others should earn their own way”. He added that they do help others but don’t promote their charity.
Gangai Amaren clarified the issue isn’t about money, but respect. “Ilaiyaraaja just wants recognition. If they had asked, he might’ve allowed the songs for free,” he said. His message was clear, artists deserve credit and respect for their work, not just legal compliance.
