The long-awaited Rowdy Rathore 2 is officially not happening. After three years of failed attempts, producers Shabinaa Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali have dropped the idea.
The script originally written for the sequel will now be turned into a fresh commercial entertainer.
Reports suggest Disney India, which owns the rights to the original Rowdy Rathore (2012) along with Bhansali, was reluctant to give the sequel a go-ahead. Instead of waiting, the makers decided to repurpose the story.
Veteran writer V. Vijayendra Prasad’s script is now being reworked into a powerful cop drama that still carries the mass appeal of the blockbuster that once revived Akshay Kumar’s career.
Tamil filmmaker P.S. Mithran, known for Irumbu Thirai, Hero, and Sardar, has been signed to direct. Casting is yet to be locked, but sources say Sidharth Malhotra may no longer be part of it. Production is expected to begin in early 2026.
