Diljit Dosanjh’s Panjab 95 Skips India, Set For Global Release

Diljit Dosanjh’s controversial and much-delayed movie, Panjab 95, is finally hitting the cinemas after being stuck with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for over a year. However, it will release internationally, and the producers have not clarified whether the film will get clearance to be screened in India.

Panjab 95 is based on the real-life story of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, who was kidnapped and subsequently murdered in 1995. Due to the sensitive subject of the movie, its release has faced several delays.

According to several media reports, the CBFC has suggested around 120 cuts along with a change in title. Now, the movie’s release has got a green light without any cuts, but there is no confirmation for its release in India.

On January 17, Diljit Dosanjh shared the teaser of Panjab 95, along with its release date. Helmed by Honey Trehan, the film will release globally on February 7 without any cuts. Taking to Instagram, he wrote, ”ਪੰਜਾਬ ’95 releases in Cinemas Internationally only on 7th February. P.S. Full Movie, No Cuts.”

Set during the insurgency period, also known as the Khalistan movement, in Punjab in the early 80s, human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra bravely exposed the Punjab Police’s extrajudicial killings of Sikh youth and fought against human rights abuses in the state. He was eventually kidnapped and murdered in 1995. Later, after investigation, six Punjab police officials were convicted of killing Khalra.
