In an earlier interview, Waheeda Rahman disclosed that she received criticism for using Dev Anand’s Guide.
Recently, Waheeda Rehman took home a coveted National Film Awards 2023 prize. In 1955, the actress debuted in the Telugu film Rojulu Marayi. Since then, the actress has acted in numerous motion pictures, such as Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962), Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), Pyaasa (1957), and Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959).
Waheeda discussed performing Guide and how she was chastised for portraying “Dancer Rosy” in a recent interview. She disclosed that she was collaborating on two projects, Guide and Neel Kamal. Nevertheless, because of the part she was playing in the Dev Anand-starring film, Ram Maheshwari, Neel Kamal’s director, was not pleased with her participation.
Speaking on the same subject, Waheeda Rehman stated, “I was shooting for Guide and Neel Kamal at the same time.” Upon learning that I was working on Guide, the director exclaimed, “Waheeda ji, you are killing me, you have destroyed me.” I said, “I don’t get it.” “In my movie, you play a woman named Sita who is madly in love with her husband. In Guide, you play a dancer named Rosy who decides to leave her husband,” he remarked. I am thus devastated.
Waheeda Rehman stated in the same Doordarshan interview that he advised against making these kinds of films since they are unsuccessful in India. It’s functional in Hollywood. Go work in Hollywood if you enjoy these kinds of films.
The actress from Pyaasa then made a firm statement, saying, “I said I will work in both movies.” Fire me if you don’t like it. I refuse to abandon Guide. He was really angry. Dev Anand starred in Guide as well.
Conversely, Waheeda was the recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Among her honours are the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Shri.
Anurag Thakur, the minister of information and broadcasting, announced the Dadasaheb Phalke Award on X, writing, “It gives me great pleasure to announce that Waheeda Rehman ji is the recipient of this year’s prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award for her outstanding contribution to Indian cinema. For her parts in Hindi films, including Pyaasa, Kaagaz ke Phool, Chaudhavi Ka Chand, Saheb Biwi Aur Ghulam, Guide, Khamoshi, and countless others, Waheeda ji has received critical praise.
