Today marks the 15th anniversary of Singh Is Kinng, and director Anees Bazmee shares some little-known details about the Akshay Kumar-starring movie.
With his flicks, great actor Akshay Kumar has contributed to some of the biggest box office blockbusters ever. While he has shared the screen with many Bollywood women, Katrina Kaif remains the pair’s on-screen chemistry fave. Today is the 15th anniversary of their hugely successful movie “Sing Is Kinng.” Fans adored their superhit “Jodi,” and it’s considered one of his best works. In a recent interview, director Anees Bazmee talked candidly about how Akshay joined the project after only five minutes of speaking to him and without having read the complete script.
For those who don’t know, Katrina, Sonu Sood, and Om Puri had crucial roles in the 2008 movie. Anees also discussed how he came up with the concept for Akshay to wear a turban as his character Happy Singh.
Speaking about how Akshay Kumar joined Singh Is Kinng, Anees Bazmee stated, “I recall Akshay was filming for a film in a faraway nation. So I called him, told him what I was thinking, and within five minutes, he agreed. After then, Akshay became so preoccupied with other projects that we were unable to ever fully explain the plot to him, he continued.
The director also explained how he came up with the concept for Akshay Kumar’s Happy Singh character to wear a turban, saying, “I just happened to end up on the set where Akshay was filming for some other project. I gave him a turban to wear after I took it. When I first saw him, I knew exactly how I wanted to sculpt the character Happy Singh.
Perhaps because he had never performed as a sardar before, Anees Bazmee continued. The entire script was modified gradually and with consideration for the Sikh community. We made the decision to cast additional performers who would seem like Sikhs and fit the role. We even shot in Punjab amid sardars, who were incredibly enthusiastic when informed that the movie was titled Singh is Kinng.
Given that Singh Is Kinng has now been around for 15 years, that is a fascinating anecdote to relate.
