The Delhi HC has put an interim stay on Ravi Mohan Studios from using the title BRO CODE sparking debate in the film industry.
The Tamil film starring Ravi Mohan and directed by Karthik Yogi shares its title with a popular alcoholic beverage brand owned by Indo-Spirit Beverages. The company filed a case claiming that the film’s title violates its trademark rights.
Indo-Spirit argued that it has been manufacturing and selling liquor under the BRO CODE brand since 2015 and that using the same name for a film could harm its reputation.
After reviewing the case Judge said that using identical names in different industries could confuse consumers and ruled it as a possible trademark infringement.
The court has temporarily banned the use of BRO CODE in film promotions or advertisements until the matter is resolved. Ravi Mohan Studios must respond within four weeks, and the next hearing is on December 23.
