Vishwak Sen returns as both actor and director with Cult, an attempt to bring the slasher-thriller genre into mainstream Telugu cinema. Set against the backdrop of a deadly survival game, the film promises intense action, violence, and suspense. It is certainly a different attempt from the actor, but does the film have enough substance beyond its violent sequences? Read our review here.

Cult Story: DSP Sankalp Nayak (Vishwak Sen) is a sincere police officer who gets involved in a disturbing incident at a rave party on an isolated island in Goa. More than 300 youngsters gather there for a night of celebration, but things take a terrifying turn when masked attackers take control of the venue. With electric fencing and landmines blocking their escape, the youngsters are forced into a deadly survival game. Sankalp steps in to uncover the people behind this brutal operation and save those trapped inside.

Performances: Vishwak Sen is one of the film’s biggest strengths. He brings the required intensity to the police officer’s role and handles the action portions with confidence. His screen presence, particularly during his entry and the major action blocks, makes an impact.

Gayatri Bhardwaj gets a decent role and makes her presence felt. Tarak Ponnappa is effective, while Murali Sharma and Srikanth Iyengar bring experience to their supporting parts. The younger actors also contribute well to the survival sequences.

Technical Aspects: Ravi Basrur’s background score plays a major role in creating the film’s tense atmosphere and adds impact to several action scenes. Aravind Viswanathan’s cinematography is impressive, especially in the party and survival portions. Ravi Teja Girijala’s editing keeps the narrative moving at a decent pace, though a few stretches could have been trimmed. The production values are good and support the film’s ambitious scale.

Analysis: Cult deserves credit for attempting a genre that Telugu cinema rarely explores on this scale. The Goa party setup creates curiosity, and the survival-game concept offers enough scope for tension. However, the film takes nearly 45 minutes to bring Vishwak Sen’s character into the main narrative.

The initial portions spend considerable time introducing characters, which affects the pace. Once the action begins, the film picks up considerably. Vishwak Sen’s entry, the violent sequences, and the interval block are among its most engaging moments. The fast-moving screenplay in these stretches helps maintain interest.

The problem is that the film relies heavily on violence to hold attention. The second half repeats similar survival situations, making some portions feel familiar. The backstories could have been written more effectively, while the emotional scenes fail to create the expected impact. A stronger mystery and better character development would have made the central conflict more gripping.

As a director, Vishwak Sen shows ambition and handles the action portions well, but the writing does not consistently support his vision. Cult works better as a violent action experience than as a tightly written thriller. It will appeal more to viewers who enjoy graphic survival dramas than to those expecting a conventional commercial entertainer.

Verdict: Overall, Cult is a bold attempt by Vishwak Sen to explore the slasher-thriller genre in Telugu. Strong action blocks, an impactful interval and Ravi Basrur’s background score work in its favour. However, repetitive survival sequences and weak emotional writing limit its overall impact. All those who love action films with brutal impact can give the film a shot.

Bottom Line: Daring attempt
