The Karnataka government has set a cap of Rs. 200 on movie ticket prices across all theatres including multiplexes and single screens.
This unexpected move has surprised the film industry especially in major cities like Bengaluru, where premium pricing was common for big films.
While audiences are happy with the reduced prices theatre owners and multiplex chains are concerned about covering their operational costs.
Some are even considering legal action. There are also fears of black ticketing, as theatres might unofficially charge more.
Though small and mid-range films may not be affected much big pan-India movies which do strong business in Karnataka, might see a dip in profits.
If other states adopt similar pricing rules, it could hurt the South Indian film industry’s overall revenue. Authorities may need to monitor theatres to prevent misuse.
