Nowadays, even one bad film can put a director’s career at risk. That is what seems to be happening with Lokesh Kanagaraj, once considered the most promising director of the current generation in Kollywood.
The disappointing result of Coolie has slowed down his rapid rise and affected his standing in the industry.
Lokesh made a powerful debut with Karthi’s Kaithi and reached the top with the pan-India success of Kamal Haasan’s Vikram.
After that, expectations were huge when he directed Vijay’s Leo and Rajinikanth’s Coolie. While Leo did well at the box office despite mixed reviews, Coolie faced heavy criticism.
Lokesh admitted the flaws in Coolie and said he would learn from his mistakes. However, many feel he must return to his strong storytelling style soon, or risk losing the reputation he built with his earlier hits.
