Bulbbul Movie Review

Plot: Bulbbul (Tripti Dimri) enters the palace as the wife of Bade Thakur Indranil (Rahul Bose) as a child. She first meets Chote Thakur Satya (Avinash Tiwary) and thinks he is her husband. Later, she meets Mahender (Rahul Bose) another brother of Base Thakur, who is mentally retarded. Wife of Mahender, Binodini (Paoli Dam) has an illegal affair with Bade Thakur and she fears Bulbbul as her competition. She starts poisoning Bade Thakur’s mind by making him misunderstand Satya – Bulbbul friendship.

One night after drinking alcohol Indranil beats Bulbbul so much that her leg bones are broken. Mahender who always wants to play with her while she is on bed unable to move, rapes her. What happens next? Who is Satya going to side with, as he is sent to London, before Bade Thakur reacts harshly towards Bulbbul? Who is Dr. Sudip (Parambrata Chattopadhyay)? How are all these characters connected to Supernatural deaths, in town? Watch the movie for answers …

Performances: Tripti Dimri excels in the character of Bulbbul and her scene with Satya is the best example of how good she is as an actor. She gave her best to keep the mystery behind her character alive.

Avinash Tiwary is good in the role of Satya and he is highly confident about his abilities too. Rahul Bose in two contrasting characters does well, as usual. It is Cinema’s loss that he is not finding more work or not accepting. He made the variation look natural between the two characters. Paoli Dam is very good too.

Parambrata Chattopadhyay did not a bigger role but he did leave an impact. All others are also aptly cast.

Technicalities: Editing by Rameshwar S. Bhagat is very apt to the movie and he made sure that the non-linear structure doesn’t fall apart too. Cinematography by Siddharth Diwan suited the story and the supernatural elements, very well. Music by Amit Trivedi is haunting.

Writer Anvitha Dutt gives a different look to the entire film and the story. She made sure that the very predictable twist has great emotional baggage for us to route for the characters. Also, she never tries to hide the motivations behind the characters doing what they do and makes it obvious for us to involve in their journey. Each character starts and ends with a journey that comes full circle. The film even though is a supernatural thriller feels much more realistic and grounded. Art department should be praised for it.

Analysis: This movie delivers a very important message to the audiences. The hidden motives behind actions of the characters come out in the plain sight even though they don’t explicitly say it or show it. Once they do, we are satisfied with the arcs. Also, the writer manages to shock us with few character moments and hence, the movie needs to be given a viewing. But it turns out to be very simple story for people who expect big twists or turns or scares from these movies.

Bottom line: Watch it for the team effort and gripping narrative.

Rating: 3/5
