Bhamakalapam 2 Story: Anupama (Priyamani), haunted by her troubled past, resolves to lead a solitary life. She teams up with her maid, Shilpa (Sharanya Pradeep), manages a restaurant, and decides to compete in the Cooking Idol 2023 contest, overseen by the influential Antony Lobo (Anuj Gurwara) and his wife Zubeida(Seerat Kapoor). As events take a sinister turn, Anupama finds herself blackmailed by the corrupt NCB officer Sadanand (Raghu Mukharjee) into stealing the competition’s trophy. How did Anupama manage to do all this in such a deadly situation forms the crux of the film.
Performances: Priyamani is back as the edgy Anupama who is always into others’ issues and gets into trouble. She gives a natural performance in the film and holds our attention with her sincere act. Saranya Pradeep is turning out to be a fantastic actress and ably supports Priyamani in this crazy thriller. The chemistry between the two actors is very good in the film. Seerat Kapoor as the wannabe actress is also neat in the film. Anuj Guruwara is okay but the main villain is over the top and does not create much of an impact.
Technical Aspects: Prasanth R Vihari‘s background score lacks impact in elevating suspense, Deepak Yaragera‘s cinematography adeptly encapsulates the visual grandeur, complemented by commendable production standards. However, tighter editing during the first hour could have enhanced pacing. The writing is decent though it does not provide anything new for the audience. Abhimanyu Tadimeti’s direction demonstrates competence, yet a greater focus on detail could have given the film more depth, especially in the initial segments.
Analysis: If there was tension in Priyamani’s apartment, things have gone to the next level as director Abhimanyu narrated a heist drama in a passable manner. There is nothing great that is showcased in this film but the fun thrills and a few twists grab the attention of the audience.
With Priyamani’s character firmly established, the director seizes the chance to plunge directly into the narrative, trimming any excess. The screenplay is concise, driven by purpose, and seamlessly integrates dark humor into the storyline. Bhamakalapam 2 is a heist comedy that respects its limits and stays within its capabilities.
The familiar setting, coupled with the inventive use of constraints, adds to its charm while poking fun at its eccentricities. Seerat Kapoor’s role lacks significant depth for substantial performance. Sharanya Pradeep’s character could have been fleshed out more to infuse humor into this otherwise serious heist thriller.
Certain scenes come across as excessively dramatic, and a few plot points unfold predictably, thereby lessening the overall impact. The pacing of the film is slow to gather momentum, and the climax lacks conviction. By the end of it, the makers end it on a decent note. They also announce the third part and leave the story open.
Verdict: Overall, Bhamakalapam 2 is better than its first part. The sequel has some decent thrills but the narrative is not that great. If you have nothing else to do this weekend, try this film but be prepared for its routine narration.
