The nominees for the 2025 BAFTA, also known as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, were announced on Tuesday, January 15, celebrating a mix of filmmakers and emerging talent from around the world.
The awards ceremony will be held on February 16, 2025, at London’s Royal Festival Hall with “Doctor Who” star David Tennant hosting the event, marking his second time.
Meanwhile, the nominations were hosted online by Mia McKenna-Bruce and Will Sharpe. Let us tell you that the BAFTA is equivalent to the Oscars. The event will be live streamed in India on Lionsgate Play.
And now, making us all proud, a few Indian films have received major nods at the BAFTA 2025, including Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light, which got a nomination in the Best Film Not in the English Language category. Meanwhile, the Indian-origin British actor Dev Patel secured a nod in the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer category for his action thriller movie Monkey Man.
In the same category, the British production Santosh, starring Shahana Goswami in the lead by Indian director Sandhya Suri, has also been nominated. Additionally, the dark comedy Sister Midnight, which premiered at Cannes 2024, has also secured a spot. The movie was directed by Karan Kandhari and features Radhika Apte in the lead.
Meanwhile, papal mystery Conclave is leading with 12 nominations, including Best Film and Best Director, and second on the list was Emilia Perez, securing 8 nominations. Brady Corbet’s critically acclaimed The Brutalist has received nine nods. These three movies will compete alongside James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, and Sean Baker’s sex worker drama Anora in the best film category.
