We have been hearing about many producers thinking about direct OTT releases for their films rather than keeping them in their hard drives for longer periods of time with the lockdown and pandemic effects expected to be felt for months or an year. Film Industry is badly hit as theatres had to be closed and remain closed for months with the panic of community spread of the virus is still on. Laxmmi Bomb, movie starring Akshay Kumar, did not make any official announcement but it is believed to be releasing on OTT platforms.
Now, out of the left field, Ayushmann Khurrana and Amitabh Bachchan’s Gulabo Sitabo team announced that they are releasing their film on 2nd June, directly on OTT platform, Amazon Prime Video. It seems like Bollywood producers are making new interesting deals with OTT platforms to recover their investments as theaters might take time to function like before. For films that will have hard time to rake in crowds even under normal circumstances, may be this is the best plan going forward. Gulabo Sitabo is directed by Shoojit Sircar, who made Pink, Piku and Vicky Donor, Madras Cafe earlier.
