Are Sen Sisters set to Step Into Politics?

Speculations that Riya Sen might soon join the Congress were rampant when she was spotted participating in the Bharat Jodo Yatra alongside Rahul Gandhi.

The two daughters of Bengal, Raima Sen and Riya Sen, who have always been in the spotlight thanks to their mother Moon Moon Sen and grandmother Suchitra Sen as well as for their acting abilities, have shown an interest in entering politics in the future.

While Raima made it obvious when she planned to enter politics, Riya, her younger sister, has not provided a definitive response. However, rumours that Riya would soon join the Congress spread after she was seen travelling with Rahul Gandhi on the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

The Sen sisters expressed their intention to become politicians while remaining mum about their political allegiances.

Raima Sen said, “As of now, I am not joining politics and concentrating on my acting career, but yes, within the next 5 years, I have a wish to try my luck in politics too.”

Moonmoon Sen, their mother, won the Bankura Lok Sabha seat for West Bengal in 2014 but lost the Asansol seat to Babul Supriyo in 2019. Babul Supriyo, who subsequently switched parties and joined the Trinamool Congress, eventually became a minister in the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal administration.

She said, “My mother suggested I enjoy acting for a few more years and then join politics.”

Meanwhile, there was speculation that Riya Sen might soon join the Congress when she joined the Bharat Jodo Yatra in November of last year with Rahul Gandhi. Raima was also expected to participate in Bharat Jodo, however she was unable to do so because of filming.

Riya Sen said, “I have not seen the Bharat Jodo as a political one. It was something to unite the whole country. That is why I joined the yatra.”

“I also have an interest in politics but can’t say when and how things will happen.”

Regarding their likelihood of adhering to Mamata Banerjee’s policies like their mother, Raima and Riya declined to comment.

“Let us see how the situation unfolds,” Raima said.

Bharat Dev Varma, their father, is a member of Tripura’s royal dynasty. Pradyot Bikram Manikya, a member of the Tipra Motha party and a member of another royal line, has been advocating for a larger Tipraland for Tripura’s native population.

Raima Sen also said, “We have heard about these political developments, but as we have little connection with Tripura currently, I cannot comment anything on this issue.”

Raima Sen is simultaneously working on web series and features. She has been busy working in Mumbai in addition to Kolkata.

“I am doing more work in Mumbai now, but yes, Kolkata is my home, and whenever I get something exciting, I always look forward to acting in Tollywood,” she said.

On the other side, Riya Sen is starring in the Shawn Arranha-helmed film “Death Tale,” which is set for release on July 1.
