The motivation behind the creation of Gangs of Wasseypur, as described by Anurag Kashyap, will leave you speechless.
Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has revealed the inspiration behind his cult hit “Gangs of Wasseypur,” which will have its Australian premiere at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM).
Even though ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ is his most universally acclaimed film, Kashyap has frequently claimed that the movie changed his life, but not for the better because audiences now watch all of his films with ‘GoW’ still fresh in their minds, which he views as a disadvantage and an injustice to his films that have come after ‘GoW’.
The director most recently discussed the 2012 dual release of the movie with IANS.
Anurag, who started his career with ‘Satya’ (he shared the screenwriting credits with Saurabh Shukla), said that he always tried to make something which is radically different from his past works.
He told, “My reason for making ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ was that I had never seen such stupid gangsters. They have been fighting for over three generations and still couldn’t make peace with each other and couldn’t figure out why they were lusting after revenge. I found humour in that, I stuck to it and ran along with it.”
The film “Gangs of Wasseypur” is regarded as a milestone in Indian independent cinema because it introduced a number of talents, almost all of whom went on to become well-known figures in Hindi cinema. One such talent is Neeraj Ghaywan, who worked as Kashyap’s principal assistant director on the film and has since gone on to direct the recent releases “Made in Heaven 2” and “Masaan” from Cannes.
Anurag further mentioned, “These people might call themselves gangsters and hold the power but from outside if you look at it through a birds’ eye view, they are a bunch of really stupid people, and I found it very funny that they call themselves gangsters. The film works primarily because it’s funny in the context of a gangster film.”
