Akshay Kumar Breaks Silence On His ‘Canadian’ Citizenship Status

Akshay Kumar recently spoke extensively about his “controversial” citizenship status in Canada

Despite being one of Bollywood’s most adored actors, Akshay Kumar has frequently faced criticism. The actor has been a part of Indian film for quite a while, and over his career, he has experienced both highs and lows. Akshay is currently busy promoting his forthcoming movie Selfiee, in which he will star alongside Emraan Hashmi. The movie, which is being directed by Raj Mehta of Good Newz, is set to hit theatres today, Feb. 24.

The actor was recently questioned about his Canadian citizenship, which has frequently become a matter of concern for many people including netizens, since he has travelled to places for promotional interviews.

When asked about it in a recent interview, he expressed his gratitude to India and remarked that it means the world to him. But, he went on to say that he has now submitted an application for a new passport and will do so if he receives the renounced status from Canada.

Akshay Kumar said, “India is everything to me… Whatever I have earned, whatever I have gained is from here. And I’m fortunate that I get a chance to give back. You feel bad when people say things without knowing anything.” Further when asked about his more than 15 Bollywood movies failing at the box office in the 90s.

He said, “I thought that ‘bhai, my films are not working and one has to work’. I went there for work. My friend was in Canada and he said, ‘come here’. I applied and I got in. I had just two films left for release and it is just luck that they both became superhit. My friend said, ‘go back, start working again’. I got some more films and I kept getting more work. I forgot that I had the passport. I never thought that I should get this passport changed but now yes, I have applied to get my passport changed and once I get the renounce status from Canada…

Following his appearance in an interview with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2019 in advance of the Lok Sabha elections, Akki’s Canadian citizenship came under scrutiny.
