KaththiSandai, which means power of Sword in Tamil, starring Vishal and Tamannah with Vadivelu dubbed and released in Telugu as Okkadocchadu did not manage to show any power at box office but the director Suraaj with his Razer sharp created a mini controversy with his comments over actresses in a interview given to box office trackers. He commented that in his films actresses especially heroines are there to give ‘pleasure’ to audience with their skin show and not to show off their performance.
He continued saying that should be the way a commercial director should be thinking and that mass audience or ‘low class’ audience come to theatre only to watch such scenes. He further stated that it is reason they are paid high remunerations. He gave this reply for a question about Tamannah’s extensive skin show in the songs and the film. These comments angered the normally silent and media shy Nayantara who lashed out saying, ” We are not strippers and we do wear certain clothes if script demands so and not because we are being paid to do so. I am saddend by such comments and will not tolerate such behaviour which would result in a wrong impression about film industry especially actresses in common audience” . She demanded an apology from the director and requested others to show some respect for working women who are capable of showing acting prowess.
Later Tamannah tweeted her displeasure saying that she was interrupted by this issue when she was enjoying an women empowering film like Dangal in theatres. She asked for an apology and said she is deeply hurt to have known and worked with such a person for 6 months. Suraaj and the interviewers Ramesh Bala issued a public apology. Suraaj said he was just making some funny comments with known friends in an interview and did not realise the audacity of his statements. He further stated he has utmost respect for women. Even the interviewers said that they laughed in the interview due to Suraaj way of putting things but not in support for his immature comments. Vishal the hero of the film and General Secretary of Nadigar Sangam tweeted that the issue is resolved with Suraaj giving an apology and stated that the comments are unnecessary. Well, even though the issue is resolved one has to wonder if we are living 2016 B.C or 2016 A.D
