The COVID-19 epidemic has caused a two-year delay in the award presentations. The best Indian films that were released in calendar year 2020 were recognised at the 68th National Film Awards, which took place in 2022. Best Feature Film went to the Tamil film Soorarai Pottru, and Best Director went to the late Sachy for his work on Ayyappanum Koshiyum. The Best Actor award went to Ajay Devgn and Suriya, who also shared the Best Actor honour with Aparna Balamurali. The 67th National Film Awards, which were presented in 2021, honoured the top Indian films of 2019. Marakkar: The Arabian Sea’s Lion took home the highest prize that year.
The Directorate of Film Festivals is in charge of the National Film Awards, which were first given out in 1954. The Marathi movie Shyamchi Aai won Best Feature Film for the first time ever, however Lagaan, which won eight awards in 2002, continues to hold the record for most awards in National Film Awards history. The ceremony recognises the best films in regional languages in addition to national accolades, and it also gives industry giants the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for lifetime achievement. Superstar Rajinikanth was the winner the previous year.
